Have you ever had that feeling overwhelm come over you? You know what I’m talking about….that feeling that there is no light at the end of the tunnel, that you literally have so much to do you don’t know where to start and you almost feel paralyzed to do anything at all? Usually in these moments you are most vulnerable to letting the seeds of doubt creep in and try to tell you that you can’t make this work, that it would just be better to quit…..
This is why it’s so crucial for us to find ways to get past that feeling, because the truth is that quitting is not the best option!
If you have felt these feelings of overwhelm then take comfort in knowing that you are 100% not alone! So many of us deal with this in our life. The definition of overwhelm is to overcome completely in mind or feeling. I really feel like it’s important to understand that definition because how you actually overcome it has a lot to do with your mind and feelings and being able to control and release everything that is going on in your mind.
How Can You Overcome Overwhelm?
1. Succumb to the Feelings.
Well you can temporarily succumb to it. You can give in to the feelings on unmotivation and take a temporary break, maybe that means that you shut off and walk away from your business for a period of time until you feel ready to jump back in. This may or may not involve wine and reality TV (totally speaking from experience here – I absolutely have done this!!)
While this option will allow you to block out those feelings and remove yourself from the situation I really don’t recommend doing this as you are not dealing with the cause of your feelings in the first place. Not only that you are letting your limiting beliefs get the best of you and trust me there are much better ways to get through this!
2. Take Care of Yourself
Usually we have feelings of overwhelm when we haven’t been putting ourselves as a priority. When you are a Mompreneur it can be really difficult, it’s easy to put your kids, your husband and your home before yourself, but the reality is that you really are no good to anyone if you aren’t taking care of yourself. There is a reason that the emergency instructions on an airplane tell you to put your oxygen mask on first before you help your children and the same is absolutely true in your business. You need to have a routine of self care to ensure that your cup is full or you will always feel like you are on the brink of overwhelm.
So take some time and pour into yourself, whether you have a spa day, get a mani/pedi, get your hair done, hire a babysitter and go shopping, or just plain lock yourself in the bathroom so your kids can’t get you and put some headphones and positive affirmations on. Really it doesn’t matter what you do as long as it means you are putting yourself first. Clear your mind and then step back into it with a clear head and fresh perspective, chances are you will be ready to tackle your challenges.
While I really do recommend doing this on a regular basis it still doesn’t get to the root of what is making you feel overwhelmed. Self care is a crucial part of being a successful Mompreneur but is simply a band aid when we look at ways we can overcome overwhelm.
3. To-do Lists
I’m a huge fan of to-do lists and when you are feeling overwhelmed one of the best things you can do is a complete brain dump of everything that needs to be done. No editing, just let everything out and then afterwards go through and organize the tasks and prioritize them so that you can start checking things off the list. There is nothing better than the sense of accomplishment you get when you start getting things done.
It is a great idea to have a to-do list going on a weekly or even daily basis, not only to keep you organized but to keep the feelings of overwhelm under control.
In my experience journaling really is the best long term solution to overwhelm. Journaling allows you to get to the root of what is causing you to have those feelings and once you know the root you can start to find and implement solutions so that you prevent those feelings in the future. According to Psych Central, the act of writing access the left brain which is analytical and rational, this frees up the right brain which houses your creativity, intuition and feelings. Journaling is proven to remove the mental blocks, thereby allowing you to better understand yourself.
If you have ever tried journaling in the past you can probably attest to some of the amazing benefits, journaling is a great way to clarify your thoughts and feelings. You are able to access your subconscious much easier when you journal and once you start, everything starts to flow onto the paper without you really thinking about it. You also get to know yourself much better, what makes you happy, what you are passionate about, what gives you confidence and on the other hand, what upsets you, what situations are really toxic for you. It also is an amazing way to release stress. You have the ability to really release all of your emotions around a situation rather than carry them around with you in your mind and finally it is a fantastic way to solve problems. Through the act of journaling you are focusing your left brain on the writing itself, allowing your creative brain to form solutions.
One of the best ways to journal is to use prompts to really get your mind to focus on what you need to deal with. Click Here to access my FREE guide to overcoming overwhelm for 14 prompts that can help you to deal with feelings of overwhelm.
